Apply for a Parkinson’s UK advanced clinical training fellowship (Parkinson’s and mental health)

Parkinson’s UK, via the Parkinson’s Excellence Network, is offering a fully funded advanced clinical training fellowship in Parkinson’s and mental health.

Applications are invited from psychiatry specialist trainees who want to undertake advanced clinical training in Parkinson’s at a UK hospital and anticipate a career in Parkinson’s in the UK. Funding up to a total value of £87,000 is available to cover employment costs.

In 2023, we funded 2 advanced clinical training fellowships in Parkinson’s and mental health. You can read about the Fellows and their aims in this news story.

Read on for further details and an overview of the application process for this exciting opportunity.

  • You must be a UK psychiatry specialist registrar, currently registered with the General Medical Council (GMC).
  • Applications from any of the 4 UK nations are encouraged.
  • It is expected that the fellowship will be both broad and in-depth. In your application, you will need to clearly state the knowledge and skills that you want to gain through the fellowship that are over and above standard Psychiatry Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) training. The fellowship can be flexible for an individual to develop clinical skills expected for independent clinical practice at consultant level in the UK.
  • The start date will be set by the successful candidate but must be within 12 months of the grant award date.
  • Full and part time applications will be considered. Fellowships must be a minimum duration of 4 months and a maximum duration of 1 year (pro rata if part time). The fellowship must be completed within 18 months of the start date.
  • The funding will be paid directly to the host institution. It is not subject to full economic costing (estates and indirect costs are therefore not payable) and the full salary requested through funding will be paid directly to the host organisation.
  • You will be required to participate in a minimum of 3 interim appraisal meetings per year.
  • A final appraisal will take place in the last month of the fellowship to include one or more independent external assessor(s).
  • Applications open at 9am on Monday 9 September 2024.
  • In advance of the application, you should identify a named UK-based clinical supervisor and host institution.
  • To complete your application, please complete the application form by 5pm on Monday 28 October 2024. Late applications will not be considered. You will need to upload your CV and a one-page personal statement to the form. The personal statement should outline how an advanced clinical training fellowship in Parkinson’s will aid you in your future plans. Complete the application form here.
  • In the form, you will also need to state the proposed length of the fellowship and the amount of funding being requested.
  • Interviews will be held between Wednesday 27 November 2024 and Wednesday 4 December 2024.
  • Applicants will be informed of the outcome no later than Thursday 12 December 2024.
  • Queries regarding the application procedure should be directed to [email protected]. Prospective candidates are also welcome to contact us to arrange an informal discussion about the fellowship if needed.

Our Equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) strategy sets out our overarching goal, ambitions and EDI promise. The charity wants equity for everyone who lives with Parkinson’s, and the people in their lives, in the UK. You can read the EDI strategy here.
