Raymond Briggs CBE includes Parkinson’s UK in his generous legacy
The gift was made in memory of his long-term partner, Liz, who developed Parkinson’s towards the end of her life.
Parkinson’s UK is one of 3 charities to receive a generous gift in the will of the much-loved author and illustrator Raymond Briggs, who died in 2022. Best known for classic children’s stories including The Snowman, Father Christmas and Fungus The Bogeyman, Raymond supported Parkinson’s UK in recognition of the information and support he and his family received from the charity.
Liz was Raymond’s partner for 42 years and a much-loved teacher, mum and grannie. She was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in her early 70s and died in 2015. Raymond and Liz’s family found the information and help from Parkinson’s UK invaluable, both through Liz’s illness, and when Raymond himself developed Parkinson’s.
Raymond’s books sold over 8.5 million copies worldwide in 24 languages and many were adapted for TV. Now, his life and works are being celebrated in a new exhibition in Ditchling, East Sussex where he lived and worked, this summer.
Parkinson’s UK, along with Blood Cancer UK and Rethink Mental Illness, have benefited from Raymond’s legacy.
